SEO definition and recommendations

This article is intended to be a very basic introduction to how to do yourself the SEO for your online shop. Just follow these rules when you write your products description. It is simple and easy to do!


SEO meta tags

Your SEO keywords are the key words and phrases in your website content that make it possible for people to find your site via search engines.

Meta tags are snippets of text that describe a page's content; the meta tags don't appear on the page itself, but only in the page's code. Meta tags help search engines to quick recognize what a web page is about.

Meta tags that matters for SEO: Meta title, Meta keywords and Meta description.

Meta title: most search engines will consider first 60 characters.

Meta description: most search engines will consider first 160 characters. The rest will not matter.

Meta keyword: most common word or short phrases (2-3 words combined) to describe your page (product). Separate the keywords with comma between them. Most search engines consider first three keywords. The most relevant keyword should be placed in front of the others.

The term long-tail keywords means phrases keywords (three or four words) that describe a very specific product or services (keyword). These long-tail keywords will increase your website relevance in search engines when the user uses a highly specific search phrase. It is demonstrated that when users are using such long-tail keywords in their search, they are more determined to buy.

Short keywords (one word or phrase of two words) are most desirable, but much harder to get relevance in search engines optimization.
The long-tail keywords are easier to get relevance in search engine optimization, but will be fewer searches that match these long-tail keywords.


Meta tags recommendations

1. Use meaningful name for all your images and file. Your website may be browsed by users which look for images into search engines. Use the name of the product for product images.

2. If you have more than one image or file for same product you may choose same name adding an order number at the end of the name.

and so on


3. The proximity to beginning of your keyword into name of product, file or image is recommended.

EX: Better Keyboard K810 than K810 Keyboard for my Keyboard keyword.


4. Use meaningful names for your products. The name of your product should start with the main keyword for that page.

EX: Better Keyboard Bluetooth Illuminated K810 than K810 Bluetooth Illuminated


5. Repeat the name of the product in description of the product. It will be useful to write the name of the product any time you have an opportunity and use less pronouns such it.


6. Use unique meta tags for individual pages. Do not use same meta tags for more than one page (product).

To make a correct decision on how people will search for your products, you may try defining as short as possible your product (in one to four words, not more). Now, try to describe it with other words and make few variations on same theme. To test them, you can use the Google tools for keywords trends.

The relevance of your keywords for search engines optimization depends on:

  • on page factors
    • How long is the page (number of words)
    • How many times the keyword is found in the page text (repeat keyword throughout the text)
    • How close of the beginning the keyword appear in each paragraph
    • How often is the page updated
    • How interesting is the page (users that get here spend lots of time into this page)
  • off page factors
    • How big is the website
    • How relevant for the website is the page we talk about
    • How old is the website (the older, the better)
    • How many time the users search for the page we are talking about (how big is users interest for your page)
    • How many other pages are referring to your page (how many external links to your page exist)
    • How many other similar pages exist on the internet (became an authority in your domain)
    • and why not, how much money you spend on online advertising for your products to be found online (advertising brings brand awareness and awareness makes products desirable)

The list can go on and on.

In other words, the perfect web page, or even more, the perfect website, does not exist. In real word we face with an enormous number of websites in any area of interest and the number is growing. Do not believe in miracles! SEO will not make you rich overnight. To get on top is hard, but to stay on top is even harder.
Be realistic with your expectations: do your best to stay on top of your website optimization, be patient (nothing will happen overnight) and spread the word about your products. As I mentioned it, the advertising helps. By seeing your adverting again and again, people will came to trust your business and will became your customers.

SEO is built on common sense. If you network (online and offline) your business all the time, you will have traffic to your website. If you do not talk about your business, nobody will know about it.

Consider the keywords relevance list as guide to improve your website SEO. Start by bearing in your mind the simple SEO rules explained at the beginning of this article, grow your website (always think big for your business), create a social network for your business, write about your business and spread it around the web with links to your website when possible, write books to became an authority if applicable, increase your business popularity (freebies are a good way to do this).
